Skegby & Huthwaite Involving Patients (SHIP Group)

Welcome to the SHIP Group

My name is Steve Wright, and I’m the current Chair of the SHIP Group (Skegby and Huthwaite Involving Patients), which is the Patient Participation Group for Brierley Park Medical Group (BPMG). On behalf of all of the SHIP members, I would like to welcome you to our webpage where, hopefully, you’ll be able to get a better understanding of who we are and what we do. If you want any more information then please drop us an email at shipgroupbpmg@yahoo.com

Who we are and what we do

We are a group of volunteers, who are all patients at BPMG. Representatives from the staff of BPMG are also members of the Group. We meet once a month (excluding August and December) on the second Tuesday from 4.30pm to 6.00pm at the Huthwaite site. Where members are unable to attend the meeting in person, then an invitation is sent out to participate via MS Teams.

We do not have any specialised training, but we all want to try to help make the patient experience at BPMG as good as possible. We seek to do this by working collaboratively with the administrative and medical staff at BPMG. We operate under certain guidelines as to how we can do this, and these have been drawn up in line with national recommendations for Patient Participation Groups. These are issued to every prospective member who completes and submits an application form to the Assistant Manager of the Group at the Huthwaite site.

Click here to access the application form.

We work alongside BPMG in helping to organise Health Events (looking to provide patients with the opportunity to learn more about specific health issues), assisting in running BPMG-led clinics (such as the Flu/Covid vaccination clinics) and fund-raising to provide additional  equipment that is not normally funded by the NHS, to make the patient experience better at BPMG.

We have four designated officers (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Communications Officer) who have specific duties as outlined in our guidelines. Nominations for these are made, and normally confirmed, at the Annual General Meeting (held at the May meeting of the SHIP Group), when other administrative duties are carried out.

Any personal details of SHIP members are held by BPMG under the latest data protection regulation.

Each meeting has formal Minutes of the points raised at that meeting, and is run alongside an Agenda and an Action List that is issued to each member of the SHIP Group prior to the meeting.

We are NOT a forum for complaints against BPMG. There is a specific Complaints Procedure that BPMG has in place and we will never be party to information that BPMG has received on this, as this is dealt with in strictest confidence by BPMG. We may, however, raise concerns with BPMG on issues that are brought to our attention and that lie outside any issues that are covered by BPMG Complaints Procedure.
